Coulter: Men who live off the money from their wives can't speak to the middle class

Additional quote in article:

Now, having a wife who provides you with a private jet and eight multimillion-dollar vacation homes provides for a comfortable life. But is this the right preparation for becoming president? . . .

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

More from Coulter:

... a kept man. He lives off the money made by other men and left to their daughters or wives.
His specialty in life, I mean, if he has an economic plan, I think the one I'd like to hear about is how to snooker millionairesses into marrying me and living off them. I mean, that is not an, a, a trivial point.

Sure, no question, it sounds like she's talking about John McCain, right? But no, actually, she's talking about John Kerry in 2004. But I can assume she'll be opposing McCain any time ...

Did you write that headline or did NV automatically when you seeded it? I only ask that because this is an op/ed piece by Glenn Greenwald. And I can't find anywhere in the article where Coulter said those words.

Anyway the author brings up great and fresh fodder for the democrats. I can't believe McCain had to sign a pre-nup. What a loser! (something he'll experience again in Nov).

Target her words and opinions, there's plenty to challenge; going for her looks is not fair play. Even if someone were to have gender issues it is still not relevant to individuals as equals and we should all be measured by what we say and do. Ann has plenty of material to go after.

Thanks, SnotRag Dave, but I was hoping Gene in MA would answer this. With my limited knowledge of journalism to me the headline is set up that way (name, colon, quote).

I have seeded a few stories and NV has taken care of the headline. However I have some articles in the works and would want to know if this is acceptable and why.

    Demmywemmy,

Thanks for your question regarding the headline. I think Dave did a good job responding, but as you asked for my personal response, here it is:

Section 3 of the COH states: "Headlines should be supported by the information presented in the article/seed, rather than used primarily as a means to draw attention."

The direct quote, attributed to Ann Coulter in the seed, is:

John Kerry can't really speak to the middle class tax cuts, inasmuch as he is ...
a kept man. He lives off the money made by other men and left to their daughters or wives.

In my view, the headline is supported by the direct quote listed above, but if you feel the headline is in error, please feel free to report it. No hard feelings if you do. :)

I certain enjoy a good trash-talkfest when it comes to bottom-feeders like Coulter and her ilk.

But let's stay on topic here.

The point is... John McCain is a kept man. He sought out a rich family... making himself available for 'services' when he was not on the market... and used those resources to further his personal agenda.

In his late step-father... he found someone to which he could relate: a connected man who abandoned his first wife (AND two children!!!) to snuggle up to another offer.

John McCain cannot relate to me.

You can see in her face she may have wealth but she is not the happiest person in the world. Her books jump to the top because right wingers juice it up by putting in large orders in advance and then fade off into oblivion almost as fast. Enough people buy them to make her rich but she is just playing up to the right wing and probably looks at them as suckers.

              Interesting and almost funny.

I think the reason McCain doesn't know how many homes they have, is because Cindy McCain doesn't tell him, McCain's finances and his wifes are kept very separate. Senility may play a part but the drive to be President and kissing up to Bush to that end is likely to be an effort to make his own mark in terms of "worthiness" not some patriotic vision for America.

But to be president he should at least be aware of how many homes 150,000 vets own and he doesn't know the answer to that question either. Even though it's even more simple, the answer is ZERO, There are 150,000 homeless vets. and he fought the Veterans bill he now attempts to take credit for.

                Ha!
                1) the headline is deliberately misleading; Ann Coulter barely takes up a sentence in the entire article.

                2) I've seen Mrs. Kerry and I've seen Cindy McCain. It's pretty clear John Kerry was after money, LOL. It certainly wasn't looks or brains.

                3) Check the legislative records of John Kerry and John McCain. McCain has actually authored substantive legislation, unlike John Kerry (who pretty much just signed on to other people's work or authored legislation to honor people/groups). You don't have to believe me, just check their voting histories. So, McCain, who actually does what people voted him to do, is hardly a kept man, while Kerry, who has done virtually nothing in Congress, certainly thinks he's entitled to get paid for doing nothing.

                4) Kerry comes from a rich family--the Forbes family (through his mother). He's always had a rich life and never worked for a living. He really is a kept man. He has no concept of how to live like normal middle class person. He grew up going to boarding schools and vacations on private beaches. By contrast, McCain went to 20 schools as he had to travel with his parents (Dad was an admiral) around the world. He was a POW during the Vietnam war. He was definitely not rich like Kerry post-war, until getting re-married. And even then, he's certainly brought something to the marriage, since Cindy McCain certainly could have chosen anyone she wanted.

                5) Your marriage slur: McCain's divorce was uncontested by his first wife. They remained friendly until she died. It's funny how you gloss over the facts that McCain was tortured in North Vietnam and certainly had his own physical and psychological scars, which undoubtedly contributed to the failure of his marriage. Your article makes it seem like he dumped his wife to get money, when in fact McCain had serious marital issues (his imprisonment/separation/torture, her own accident) that would destroy virtually any marriage, no matter how strong.

                6) The prenuptial agreement between McCain and his wife essentially protects her assets. This hardly makes him a kept man. This is simply common sense.

The biggest difference: the people you quote were talking about JOHN KERRY specifically and not about people who marry someone richer than them in general. Your failure to understand this is why your article is silly.

Prenuptial's are designed to agree on how the property and money will be split between the two parties in the event they split. Has nothing to do with their living arrangements while they are together. The sad part is McCain appears not to know how much property his wife owns or he had another McCain moment.

Perhaps the Rovian tactics which got Bush and Cheney into the White House for 8 disastrous years should be used against McCain. The way this works, Anthony, is that you take some personality flaw like marrying for money and you blow it out of proportion and you just keep saying it over and over until even the most uninformed voter is aware of it and thinks it's important. So if now we say John McCain is a gigolo who married his wife for her money, and we get some blond Nazi dressed as a dominatrix, a loud mouthed insufferable boor who is popping hydrocodone like candy, and maybe an onanistic ego maniac to take up the chant and repeat it every few minutes we can neutralize the freak show that Republicans use as their stock in trade.

Your marriage slur: McCain's divorce was uncontested by his first wife. They remained friendly until she died.

I'm pretty sure Carol's not dead.

Your failure to understand this is why your article is silly.

Has anyone gotten an interview with this Carol of late? The disfigurement as I understand it came from a car accident. Is it truly that horrific?

Anyway, it's Cindy McCain, the woman who

certainly could have chosen anyone she wanted

, who is the real creep.

To Anthony nearly always right. Why all the personal attacks? In case you haven't received the latest Republican talking points, McCain isn't running against Kerry. The remark about Mrs. Kerry's wife was hurtful and totally uncalled for. It almost was like someone like....let me see... Ann Coulter would say. Get a life of your own and you might no longer feel compelled to degrade others.

Furthermore, when were you appointed to be John McCains star apologist. He dumped his first wife (still living) because she became obese after her accident. John McCain grew up in the type of considerable privilege the USN affords it's dynastic admirals. McCains grandfather was also an admiral. Do a little research Anthony and you might be right more often.

I saw an article with Carole McCain recently, she still lives in Alexandria, VA I believe and made it perfectly clear that their marriage ended because after John came home, he did not want to be 40 ish, he wanted to be 25.

I'll have to dig around for where I read it and post a link.

                Anthony,

                1) the headline is deliberately misleading; Ann Coulter barely takes up a sentence in the entire article.

The headline is not at all misleading, as explained in post 1.17. Also, by my count, Coulter takes up four sentences in the article. I'm pretty sure that's more than one sentence, though I admit I'm no math major.

Your second point, that Kerry was after money because he couldn't have been after someone for looks or brains is inflammatory and unnecessary. You show your inability to debate on the merits of an argument when you resort to such childishness.

Your third point, that McCain has written more legislation is interesting but off topic.

In your fourth point, you assert that Kerry is a "kept man" because his family was rich. You obviously don't understand the term "kept man" ... And, clearly, neither does Ms. Coulter, since she argues that he lived off his wife's money, a point you counter. Also, you contradict your own second point ... If he was already so rich, how, praytell, do you come to the conclusion that he married for money?

In point five, you mention a marriage slur. I'm not sure who that was directed at, since I made no such slur. I suppose you are directing that comment to the article's author, clearly indicating you don't understand how Newsvine works. But how, exactly, do you come to the conclusion that McCain's POW experience and his wife's accident are "serious marital issues"? I fail to understand how those things would justify a divorce. Now, if you cited some evidence of discord in the marriage prior to his deployment to Vietnam, I could buy into that, but this "He was a POW, that's why he left his wife" line of reasoning is as inane as the "He was a POW, that's why he doesn't know how many houses he owns" line from Camp McCain.

In point six, you seem to assert that having a prenuptial agreement has something to do with the financial arrangements of the couple while they are living in wedded bliss. But, of course, such is not the case, and your point is, therefore, irrelevant.

Finally, yes, they were talking about John Kerry, but examine again the quote from Coulter:

John Kerry can't really speak to the middle class tax cuts, inasmuch as he is ...
a kept man. He lives off the money made by other men and left to their daughters or wives.

The definition of "inasmuch": "in view of the fact that; since" ... Therefore, Ms. Coulter is saying that since Kerry lives off the money from his wife, he cannot speak to the middle class. She has set a condition for the ability to speak to the middle class, that being not living off the money of your spouse. Since McCain does, in fact, live off the money from his spouse, it logically follows that Ms. Coulter thinks Mr. McCain cannot speak to the middle class.

                Thanks for trying, though.

                Gene,

The first point is moot, really, lets quarrel over 3 sentances when Obama can't even remeber there are 50 states not 57.

Your response to the second point...unless I can't read English, the majority of this first page is dedicated to the bashing of looks and sex of Ann Coulter...where is that relavant? Although a bit childish don't you think, but maybe you failed to recognize that as well.

The third point is factual altough an extreme point of denial, which also goes hand in hand with his positions against Obama.

Your 4th point that he didn't marry for money, in all reality, I can assure you it was her influences as well as her money that he married her for. That would be her political connections and if spout some crap about her not having any connections your delusional.

Your fifth point shows your ineptitude towards any military member and their spouses as well as the strain that the relationships they take on depolyments as well as what McCain and his first wife went through with him as a POW.

With those stated, lets talk about Obama and his "status", explain to me how when McCain actually has family members staying at those houses while Obama has a brother that makes a dollar a month is compareable for Obama to be able to speak to the middle class. Yes, I realize that this article was about Kerry, but it is the meat and potatoes that you should be concerned with. I still haven't heard from the Obama camp as to why he made 4 million dollars last year but can't even take care of his own brother.

As for the homes, why isn't anyone bring up Rezco and how Obama purchases HIS home and the property next door. I am willing to post about McCain's faults like his "across the aisle" stances, but why is it anything bad about Obama gets swept under the rug?

                  Former,

Absolutely, I agree that the number of sentences attributed to Coulter in the article is a silly issue to bring up. So, then, one is forced to wonder why you opened the door to that argument. And, as we all know, Obama definitely goofed when he said "57 states" while clearly referring to the 57 contests in the Democratic primary. But that's not as bad as referring to Putin as President of Germany, confusing Sunni and Shiite, or inventing a border between Iraq and Pakistan.

I've reported as abuse those comments that are attacking Ms. Coulter's appearance, and deleted one post that used foul language to belittle her looks. Hopefully you -- and others -- will report those posts as abuse, as well.

I denied nothing in your third point about McCain writing more legislation than Kerry. I can't stand John Kerry and am not interested in defending the record of someone I didn't support in 2004. Therefore, I concede that point. However, would you argue that McCain's time as a POW explains why he can't seem to completely follow his own law?

In point four, I didn't argue that he didn't marry for money, I questioned your "proof" that he did marry for money (based on Ms. Kerry's looks) particularly given that he had plenty of money already.

My fifth point, asking you to provide evidence of your claim that being a POW led to McCain's first marriage's breakup in no way displays ineptitude. If anything, your inability to provide said evidence shows your own. Further, coming from a military family with a somewhat similar background to Senator McCain's, I understand all too well the strain placed upon marriages when families are separated. However, since Senator McCain (who has no problem using his POW status to excuse his mistakes a la "I can't remember how many houses I own because for five years I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table") calls the failure of his marriage entirely his fault and refers to it as his "greatest moral failure" I have a hard time accepting it was due to his time as POW. Further, the former Mrs. McCain said here that the breakup of their marriage was because John 'wanted to be 25, not 40."

As for Obama's alienation from his half brother, I can't say what causes it. Maybe, like Cindy McCain denying her own half sister's existence, there is a history of animosity between the two. Or maybe Obama simply has no contact with his half brother. My own personal history bears out this possibility. I have three half brothers from my biological mother and a half sister from my biological sister. I was raised with my sister and we keep in touch frequently. I barely know my oldest half brother and we don't keep in touch at all; I've never met the other half brothers. I simply can't say why the separation exists between Obama and his half brother, but then, neither can you.

As for McCain's homes, it doesn't matter how many he owns. What matters is that, by his own words, he can't remember how many he owns because he was a POW. A thinking individual would then be compelled to wonder "What else has he forgotten due to his former status as a POW? What will he forget in the future because of it? What other mental affects does he suffer from because of this treatment?"

And if you think Obama's connection to Rezko has been swept under the rug, you're not paying attention. The media covered it virtually incessantly during the primaries, and it's kicking up again here in the general. I suppose you don't mind that no one is looking into McCain's cover-up for Abramoff, though, right?

Why is this Ann Coulter babe important? She never seems to have anything to say that isn't loaded down with inuendo and rumor. At best she comes off to me as one who is very clever at manipulating with words. Has anyone heard the story about her being a gay muslim?

As for McC being a gigolo, well, I don't know about that. The article is more about Kerry and the last election. However the ploy seems to have worked; an article about Kerry somehow gets wedded to McC and suddenly it's about him.

Perhaps we spend too much time paying attention to people who are too transparent to be believeable, the more we listen the more important they seem to become. Sorta like being famous because they're famous. As far as I can tell Ann Coulter is an amusing nobody with nice hair.

                        I had forgotten this:

Carol remained resolutely loyal as McCain's political star rose. She says she agreed to talk to The Mail on Sunday only because she wanted to publicise her support for the man who abandoned her.

Indeed, the old Mercedes that she uses to run errands displays both a disabled badge and a sticker encouraging people to vote for her ex-husband. 'He's a good guy,' she assured us. 'We are still good friends. He is the best man for president.'

But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.

This is something that needs following up on...

Biden would have been the best choice for the top spot! McCain is just an angry, delusional.old war monger! Obama is the ONLY choice that makes any sense! And here's your two cents you can have them back! you'll need every cent if McBush wins and the republican-fascist party wins sorry STEALS another election!!

Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity had a personality contest. There were no winners.

With McCain and Bush flying jets overhead and lots of 'splosions 'n stuff.. That'd be so cool. Not onboard with the small farm animal though; I give a hoot about them. Can the vaseline come from Iraq?

John Kerry, John McCain and George Bush belong to the same group, country club men parading as politicians. Remember Skull and Bones? Whether thats true or not, I do believe that the bleeding of Americans should stop NOW. We cannot have rich guys who dont know how to work hard in their life running this country, WE just continue to beslaves. Hell, I earn 90,000 a year and all I can afford is a 250K one bedroom condo. What about those families who earn 40K a year?
