
Like many Americans, I spent Independence Day enjoying good food, time with my friends (my family is too far away to spend the day with), and fireworks. From my home in Worcester, Massachusetts, I can observe the Fourth of July display at the College of the Holy Cross without even leaving the comfort of my back porch so it's become something of an annual tradition. While observing the stunning pyrotechnics, I began to ponder the political history of our nation, particularly in the context of the current presidential election.
One can hardly read a political discussion forum without encountering comments of vitriol and blind anger towards those who dare to wear the badge of "liberal". So dirty has the word become that even liberals have stopped using it, favoring the more positive spin associated with the moniker "progressive." Naturally, changing the name we call ourselves has done nothing to stop the attacks hurled at us, and we could hardly expect otherwise. A rose by any other name, after all, still smells as sweet. But the question ought not to be "Why didn't changing our name help us," but rather, "Why are we afraid to embrace our beliefs and to wear them proudly?"
Detractors will often cry that liberalism will ruin the country; that we are pacifists bent on seeing our nation destroyed; that we would rather throw our lot in with terrorists and thugs than see America succeed. Yet, we all should comfort ourselves in the knowledge that this sort of diatribe is purely the concoction of the far right and has no basis in historical fact. Everyone who graduated high school could, if they so desired, list some of the greatest achievements liberalism has offered us, but out of habit, they choose not to do so. We liberals must not allow them to forget that our country would not be the beacon of hope for the world that it is today without the liberals of our past
Pro-war conservatives like to tell us that spreading democracy to the Middle East is our solemn duty, and that the citizens there will thank us for it one day. But could we expect our democracy to spread beyond our borders if slavery had not been abolished? Would the world take our "one voice, one vote" concept seriously if women and African Americans had not been granted the right to vote? Could we truly claim to have the answer to the racial strife that still plagues Iraq if we had not integrated our schools, ended racial discrimination in our laws, and abolished the bizarre "separate, but equal" doctrine? These advances in our social laws were all vehemently opposed by conservatives, yet they are the very advances that have made this country great, not just for those granted "greatness" by accident of birth, but for all those others who, left up to conservatives, would never have a chance to touch upon it.
Religious conservatives, oddly the most venom-filled of the group, often make the claim that liberals want to limit their freedom to worship how they choose, yet this argument displays woeful ignorance of our nation's history. In fact, if the more religious among the citizens of the American colonies had their way, there's every possibility we would not have fought the Revolution that guaranteed the very freedom they now take for granted. Some 15-20% of American colonists remained loyal to the British crown, and the largest percentage of that group were members of the Anglican Church, who were so beset by fear of Catholicism, they hailed King George and feared that a religiously free state would allow Catholic dominance to spread.(source) Further, many Quakers refused to join the revolutionary cause, choosing to remain neutral (Gottlieb, 2005.) While it's true that there were also many religious leaders and followers who felt Revolution was a path ordained by God, it is from the religious that some of the greatest dissent could be found. (Ferling, John, "A Leap in the Dark: The Struggle to Create the American Republic (2003)). Indeed, without the progressive mindset, without the belief that the status quo is not something to be maintained purely for tradition's sake, the liberties we have come to enjoy in our great society might never have come to fruition.
Social conservatives, themselves commonly identified as religious conservatives, are simultaneously the simplest and most difficult people to understand. They are fiercely patriotic, and their religion is the backbone of their lives. They are men and women of strong faith and often possess an unyielding work ethic. And certainly, their positions against issues such as abortion and gay marriage come from deeply-held beliefs that define the core of their being. But the justification for these beliefs cannot be found in law. In fact, it is these very conservatives who have, at various points throughout American history, turned their backs on the document that first outlined the liberties we, as citizens of the United States, must demand from our government: "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all mean are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable human rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Yes, for all their complaining that liberals are unpatriotic, it is the conservative movement that has consistently stood in opposition to the idea that all citizens should enjoy the same liberties, the same opportunity to find happiness. From segregation to interracial marriage, from women's rights to gay rights, from voting rights to property rights, conservatives have always stood as roadblocks, demanding that we deny freedom to all those with whom they disagree. These are the people who believe freedom of religion only applies to those who share their religious views, as demonstrated by their unrelenting efforts to codify their beliefs into our national law. It is the liberals, in blocking efforts to allow one religion's doctrine to be imposed upon all our citizens, that have truly guarded our freedoms.
Fiscal conservatives have long held the belief that sound economic policy derives entirely from a supply-side system in which the wealthiest corporations and individuals are granted the greatest tax relief, in the hope that this relief will translate into higher productivity and greater profits, which will then "trickle down" to the masses. The masses, in turn, will spend this money, thereby enhancing the financial position of all players of the game. They fail to realize that supply-side economics has largely failed to deliver on its promise (Karl Case & Ray Fair, Principals of Economics (2007)). Not only did Reagan promise us that the tax cuts he pushed through would actually pay for themselves (which turned out to be untrue), but the most recent incarnation of supply-side economics, offered by President Bush, has yielded higher unemployment and reduced productivity, the very opposite of the intended affect. On the other hand, the liberal economic policies at the heart of Roosevelt's New Deal hauled our nation out of a depression caused by the great concentration of wealth that occurred in the 1920's. More recently, Bill Clinton's economic policies gave us a GNP fully one-fourth of the entire world's output, 4% unemployment (lowest in 40 years) and 15 million new jobs. (source)
Despite all this, I would never argue that conservatives have done nothing to enhance our country. After all, Ross Perot is conservative, and he brought us Bill Clinton.

Your freedoms are their freedoms. I like to think of liberal as generous and peace loving. In order for us to keep all of our freedoms, we must allow freedom for all. Freedom for the liberal, conservative, poor, disenfranchised, uneducated, and capitalists. Is this even possible? Now that is liberal.

I notice you are having much trouble with defining conservatives in your article - perhaps that is also the problem with the word "Liberal"; too many definitions.
For example: do all "Liberals" believe in abortion rights in the same way - a woman's right to choose, or is the technology there to - instead of aborting - transplant the fetus to a woman who wants that baby; and then who's priority comes first? Is this something that anyone else has a right to get involved in? More importantly; how do you define what the "Liberal" position is, and what the "conservative" position is (Libertarian conservatives should say that it is not government's job to get involved; social and religious conservatives already are involved; etc.)
You could say that "Liberal" became a dirty word because Liberals allowed it to; they allowed certain people to define it negatively and didn't contest it. You could easily blame the "Liberal" leaders of that day for not fighting back.
Well yes, sort of. They first cursed, corrupted the social, revolutionary liberals of the Enlightenment, and thus became class liberals, class apologists. Since they are all over the map, on corporate and imperial policies, witness the history of liberal class appeasers, the social liberals, or social libertarians reconstructed its macro theories, social values under Hegel and Marx, and became the socialists, real socialists, not social democrats, class appeasers, just as the Labor party and democrats have become today.
Class corrupts freedom...and class liberals participate in this process. Just look how much Liberalism has moved to the corporate imperial class centers, that justifies corporate fascism, the Patriot Act, the negation of civil law, and the Habeus Corpus, and serviel groveling as liberal warhawks, as Obama, has done. Yes they too hate our freedoms.
Most Americans no longer asscociate Liberal with Liberty. Liberal is now painted as "tax and spend", amongst other descriptors. The very beginnings of the Libertarian party was an attempt to distance themselves from some of these.
The concept of indvidual liberty has even changed. We talk about it, but in terms of what it means to each of us as an individual. Rarely in the context of what that means for the other person. We have legislated hundreds of laws that are meant to reduce the liberty of that "other" individual, under the guise of protecting our own individual liberty.
You need look no further than the concept of "homeowner's associations" (HOA) to see this. Americans, gleefully sign on the dotted line to give up some of their individual rights, in order to belong to a group that will dictate their housing environment. Yet, they will loudly proclaim they believe in "individual rights and liberty". (Call an HOA, a communist organization and you will be defiled).
I am sure you can find many other examples. Americans are so intent on capturing "their" individual rights, that trampling on the rights of others, is just plain tough luck. (Call them fascists and you will get snapped at.)
That leaves us with today's America. Liberals are considered communists and conservatives are considered fascists. It's really odd to see these individuals flying the American Flag and asserting that they are the answer to taking this country back to it's roots.
As far as the ACLU.... The organization that was founded to protect the rights of Individual Liberties according to the Constitution, is considered by most, as a left wing group of nutcases. That should be an indication of just how we regard the rights of the "other" individual and how far we have strayed from our roots.
I have actually started conversations about taking this country back to it's roots of "individual liberty" and get a strong chorus of agreement. Delve into the specifics and I will start getting blank stares and even alarmed looks. Those conversations are fewer and fewer, as people try to avoid me.
You can see it, in their eyes and the way they talk..... "I will fight, to the death, for your rights, as long as it benefits me." Tthat might be acceptable, if the opinion were given with a long term view. Unfortunately, we live in an age of instant gratification, with no thought of what might be lurking in the future.

We are mindful of the recent tapes and propaganda messages allegedly from Al Qaeda regarding increased attacks. At this time there is no credible information warning of an imminent, specific threat to the homeland.
With the exception of the date, this has been on the DHS website for months. Imagine having a color coded system, starting 30 years ago.
Pre 9/11, it probably would have been green, based on the description of threat.
Post 9/11, it is considered "yellow". Somehow, that seems appropriate.

It's always amusing that the same people who absolutely scream that the ACLU is a dirty word (although there are some areas I do not at all agree with)these are the very same people who will BEG for help when they're in trouble. I don't think many are aware that this is truly one of the only if not the only organizations that still exist for the defense of an individual's rights. They only know that that's the organization that is seen as trying to take Christ out of Christmas and that's enough and the limit to what they know. If you know of another American organization that defends in additon to the ACLU I would like to know. I know that my neighbors have such a bad opinion of the ACLU that you can't even whisper it and they go NUTS!!! (Of course you can't say liberal either--lol)

1) The Libertarian party came into being long before "Liberal" became a dirty word and had nothing to do with "Liberalism"; in fact it had to do with "conservatism" as Libertarians consider themselves to be the true conservatives
2) Homeowners Associations - many don't want to belong to one but it is a requirement as the "community" (i.e. the builder of the tract) built the houses and created the deeds with these C & C's (Covenants and conventions - strictly speaking, these parts of a deed can limit what you can do in your own home - including having magazines like Playboy, etc. in your own home - and what you must do - like maintaining your property in a certain manner, requiring a lawn of a certain square footage - and what you may not do - restricting what kind of trees you may have, banning pools, even banning drying your laundry outside)
Communism is an economic system, not a political system; perhaps you meant to say "Call an HOA, a dictatorship ... " as the dictator is often the builder or a small group
As far as the ACLU - each side often sees them as belonging to the other - the ACLU has defended the free speech rights of the American Nazi party, Oliver North (as his conviction was tainted by coerced testimony), Westboro Baptist Church and Shirley Phelps-Roper for their free speech rights when picketing outside of Veteran's funerals; yet conservative groups ignore these and other actions and label the organization as "Liberal", "Communist" and other tags for their support of abortion rights, equality of sexual orientation, the Separation of Church and State; etc. It was interesting when they recruited representative Tom Delay (R-TX) for his stands.
Eric, 1. The word "liberal" was used as a smear in the sixties. I lived it. The libertarian party was formed in the 70's. The concept of the word liberal being "dirty" can be traced to the 50's.
The phrase liberal and conservative have certainly transposed themselves in their meanings, if you think the Libertarian Party was formed by conservatives of the modern day type.
As for communism, you do not have individual property, therefore no individual property rights. HOA's are a big step in that direction.

If I remember correctly liberal became a dirty word during the early 80's. At the time democrats had controlled our legislative body, most notably the house, for an extended period. People in America generally felt that the government had become unwieldy, ineffective, and expensive. The Cold War wasn't going well, Vietnam had been over for less than a decade, our military was tattered and frayed, welfare out of control, and our economy was still shaking off the effects of the last mid-east oil crisis. Reagan was able to lay the blame for all this squarely on the democrats' shoulders by ascribing it to their "tax and spend" philosophy.. Once republicans understood how effective this was, especially if you throw in "unpatriotic", they began hammering that same nail over and over into the democrats' collective coffin.
That's why, I think, that the liberal tag has become such a dirty word.
Interestingly enough you have a similar scenario in the present, simply reverse the party names. Deficits, oil crisis, over-extended military, unhappy general populace, a "conservative" president who actually increased the number and scope of federal agencies...

to recap - (although it actually started in the late 70's in California and spread from there) it was a PR thing: Reagan (the Great Communicator) was able to label democrats as "tax and spend Liberals", a straw man. Democrats, especially Ted Kennedy as the leading liberal within the democratic party, should have but did not respond; which, as we now know, is bad PR. They left this unanswered and Reagan won.
The rest of what you said really is not true; the cold war wasn't an issue but the economy was. Our military was not in tatters (in fact we were selling of surplus equipment; RIF (reduction in force) was the buzzword in the military as was closing surplus military bases), welfare was not out of control, the economy's problem was not a mid east oil crisis but something that can not happen in free markets - stagflation: rising prices and falling sales.
Carter could not understand this or how to fix it, again because it is something that can't happen in a free market, free enterprise system (which should have triggered the obvious question: what then do we have) and Kennedy was running against him in the Democratic primaries. Add in the Iran hostage crisis, the taking of our diplomats, the ill advised and failed rescue attempt, and Carter looked inadequate while Reagan, with all the experience of an actor, looked presidential and had a great command of PR skills; blamed "Tax and Spend Liberals" for all evils.
The Media fawned over Reagan, ignoring such ridiculous comments as the well known "trees pollute" and others, Reagan won in a landslide.
Ah if only being a religious conservative today meant holding the same values and attitudes of Quakers...
But to the point, there was a time in America when progressives and liberals did well. When civil rights and unions were supported. I suppose it all came to an end at the Cold War when unity in the face of a foe meant demonizing the differences.

Start by car-pooling to work in your SUV, the personal renewal from this event alone will inspire you to demand BBC from your cable provider.

That's pretty debatable. Several of the alphabet programs degenerated into inefficiency and busy work a few years in, and World War II boosted production enough to give many Americans jobs. I won't say that the New Deal didn't help, but giving it 100% of the credit isn't right either, I don't think.

I find this interesting because 35 years ago when I began paying attention to what was going on outside my narrow sphere I considered myself liberal in that I did not want government getting involved in day to day life. I believed in the Constitution in that there were certain rights granted to the government but these were very limited and that it enumerated very broad individual rights. I believed that all people deserved an equal opportunity to excel and that if they squandered that opportunity they must live with the consequences of their actions. I believed that everyone had the right to their own beliefs and to voice those beliefs regardless of whether I agreed with them. I chose to register as a Republican because they espoused those same values. It was the Republican party that pushed for and passed the Civil Rights Bill against strong Democratic opposition. It was the Republican party that supported the rights of individuals to be successful in their endeavors. Both very liberal ideas.
Imagine my confusion when I began paying attention to the labels of "Liberal" and "Conservative". It was like someone had flipped the definitions. Those who are labeled Liberal today wish to maintain the status quo. No new media, government in charge of everything, and no individualism. They choose to put people in groups by race, by sex, by ethnicity, or by social class. Those who are labeled Conservative believe in not grouping people but rather allowing each individual to achieve based on the effort they are willing to put forth. They believe that there is but one group and that is the group called Humans.
Today's conservative is more like the classic liberal while todays liberal is more like a combination of a socialist and a facist if that is posssible.
Your comment points out one thing -- that people who park themselves in one of the camps assign positive qualities to their own side and negative qualities te other.
Most people choose a political party or philosophy based on a few issues important to themselve. For the conservative / Republican camp today, that means more of a desire to judge other countries, to threaten with military force and to attack. It means a desire to spend less money for the common good -- things like parks, social services, sidewalks etc -- and more on themselves. It means to pick short-term gain. In business that means making more money by disregarding long-term damage to the environment, and by keeping the minimum wage blow a subsistence level in order that business owners have more money.
After choosing a party based on that party's choices for the issues, many party members then assign negative qualities to the other party. They don't care if what they assign is true. They do it to add support for their party. It's as old as politics itself.
As "liberals" became more and more intrusive into other peoples lives the word "liberal", and I'm afraid I think rightly so, became a pejoritive. That being said I would agree that "classic liberals" have been members of a variety of positive movements. In fact, when considering issues of the day, it can be enlightening to remember that liberals have moved issues which have resulted in positive outcomes. On the other hand I would suggest that it is the push and pull between liberals and conservatives which has often resulted in a finer outcome. The problem is that liberals tend to be against individual liberties which is why today many(?)have migrated to the Libertarian Party. Liberals also seem to me to be very closed minded and self-righteous and, again in my opinion, seem to be unable to logically argue their points and are much more likely to call their opponents names or question their motives.
For the sake of discussion, let's just say there are operatives in all the parties trying to alter their base. That with forethought they slowly alter the definitions.

You are eloquent, but much of this paragraph in particular is quite the opposite of the truth.
It is "classical liberalism", "traditional conservatives", now called "libertarian" who have long argued for sound money by denouncing fiat currency, and of course Keynesian economics. Supply-side economics was a creation of neoconservative Reagan and has much in common with Keynesian economics, except that it favors stimulus via corporations, rather than government.
All of these policies has the effect of inflating the currency, creating money which government, and banks can spend and get the benefit of, while average people have to pay higher prices for everything. Average people who no longer get pay raises to match inflation. With inflation conservatively at 5% anyone who is'nt getting a raise that large is taking a pay cut. Most workers no longer have unions or the clout for that.
Economic Freedom is inextricable from Civil Liberties (personal Sovereignty), from State Sovereignty, from National Sovereignty. This is Liberty.
Your attack on religious conservatives is warranted, and I will add another interesting point. Thomas Aquinas's Summa theologica - often considered the most important christian text outside the bible - believes that laws should not ban offenses that do not harm others (IE drugs, ect)

There should be more words defining between liberals(Progerssive), Moderate and Conservative. It is to easy to lump everyone in one of the 3 categories especially between liberals and conservatives.

The English called the people from America who fought the Revolutionary war "Yankees". They created the song "Yankee Doodle" in order to poke fun at them. What happened? Soon Americans became proud of the term and took it as their own. They loved the song. "Yankees" became a term that Americans liked to call themselves. The New York Yankees have often been considered "America's team".
The same thing happened in Wisconsin. People from Illinois began calling them "cheeseheads". The rest is history. Somebody invented the yellow foam cheeshead and now you see people proudly wearing them all over the place at Packer games.
Now that the conservative Republicans have been discredited after all the years of despair and failure during the Bush administration, Americans across the nation have become bolder and prouder about declaring themselves "liberals". Liberals have become tasked with fixing the problems caused by conservatives.
Liberals are Conservatives Lite™. We don't need "liberals," we need radicals.

Liberals and conservatives are just two sides of the same coin, at least in terms of economic issues (including war). They're all capitalists, they just disagree about how much regulation is involved and how much help to give the people capitalism @!$%#s on. Liberals can, in good conscience, oppose the Iraq War while wanting to strengthen the military -- they're "anti-this-war," not "anti-war." Liberals can, in good conscience, oppose the complete disaster of modern health care while still advocating a market-based solution that will be equally catastrophic but cover more people in the calamity.
There are legitimate differences between liberals and conservatives on the role of government, and on tolerance for various social issues, but those differences are more or less token, and used to give the illusion of vigorous debate. If they just admitted, "Yeah, we're basically in favor of all the same stuff and quibble on the details," there would be room for alternatives, and they certainly don't want that to happen. The key to limiting debate is to make the margins as narrow as possible while making the differences within those margins as dichotomous as possible. That's liberalism and conservatism, barking between the narrow margins of capitalist American hegemony.

To really believe freedom for all people, then u have to oppose governments would oppose freedom for the people they govern. American freedoms are for Americans, not other peoples. Why? This rethoric above is why "Liberal" became a dirty word. Repeated over and over and over again, alot of citizens bought in to it. Tell someone you love them every single day, they will stat to believe you after a while. You see the problem with this kind of statement, although; half true. Is your left with nothing but gloom? For instance. Conservatives want more taxes, just in different ways. Federally they cut them, "states" make up the difference. By the way Liberals don't want a "WHOLE" lot more government? Do an internet search on "bailout" to find leading examples of what conservative adminisitrations liberally do for corporate America but hesitate to do, as liberals suggest, for American citizens.
Liberal, to me, means tolerant and progressive, in general, more forward-thinking. Conservative, to me, means enamored of the traditional and being less than eager to part with what has worked in the past; so, continue with what has worked well in the past. Both have their merits.
The problem is that politicians use labels and then don't much act like they say they are, from the labels that they use. For example, that fishbrain Ronald Reagan was much loved as a "conservative." However, he built up the military - okay; then hugely increased government spending, as a result (that's Keynsian economics, not conservative); ran a monstrous deficit (not usually the Republic Party mantra - which used to be "fiscal responsibility").
Of course, he wasn't bright enough to do any of that, anyhow. He was a puppet for the usual monied interests in this country. He happened to be a pretty good speaker. He must have been relatively easy to get along with, on a one-on-one basis, though, 'cuz Tip O'Neill and he, more or less, did business (sometimes) politically together - at least they seemed to get along.
But Reagan did stupid things and he pandered to the intolerance of what has become the Republican party - not your grandfather's Republican Party which was and used to be a respectable lot, unlike these cretins.
Ah, well - I guess people do get the government that they deserve. Look what got elected (or, maybe not - at least the first time) these last two terms.
I fear for the Good Ol' USA - somehow, so far, it continues on despite the idiots that we appear to put in charge - . As to the future, who knows?
I find the whole debate somewhat amusing, since the differences between the two are more stylistic than anything.
To the extent that liberal has acquired a pejorative, it's only because we (the society as a whole) allowed the right wing to kidnap political discourse. That's actually the fault of liberals, who, in an admirable attempt at toleration, allowed that all views should be expressed. The right wing was thus never @!$%# slapped into submission and have now entrenched themselves with comic parodies of pundits like Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, and the other clowns.
Regrettably--I say regrettably because I would prefer there to be more--there seems to be only two schools of political thought in this country. One wants in your wallet; the other, in your bedroom. Which you embrace depends more upon which incurs your outrage. I prefer the former because they're already in my wallet, and never going to get out; they can at least stay the hell out of my bedroom.
Both sides claim they want lower taxes; they're both lying. The righties want to throw money at the pentagon for weapons systems that don't work; the left prefers social programs that don't work. They both claim they want less government; they're both lying. The right wants more eavesdropping; the left wants more employment quotas.
Need I go on with this? There's a point here, and it's this--why can't I have an actual choice here? Why not a third, fourth, fifth party? Why not something other than just liberal and conservative, with only slight variations in those flavors?

(your good article reflects the ideas and history of many groups and an interesting idea about fear of communicating our true selves.) The job description for citizen is... fill in the blanks- passionate for love of humanity, country, self... Words, definitions help us communicate, but then words and symbols can build for good or for evil. What is the goal? To life, liberty and the pursuit of individual and group, happiness, prosperity, and freedom or are those things reserved for a special few? Regretfully, names limit, peg, judge, and then the dialogs diminish. What does a healthy world community look like? What does productivity look like? Give me a passionate, visionary citizen ready to roll up their literal and figurative sleeves an equal opportunity citizen, a human rights for everybody kind of citizen. Names limit, regretfully, but unless we can gather our political strengths into a very large healthy political group we will have even less of a voice in the political process. I'm also crying out for the great loss America is suffering for the lack of a multiparty system of proportional representation. Wow, what a political landscape you could have had if all these voices could be heard as party voices in the Nations Capital,- in stead of being muffled by party machines that are too big for nuance and with candidates scrambling for the middle ground.
It's a constant and ongoing smear campaign by the Right that has been going on since Alexander Hamilton. It was in response to the 'Liberal" and Radical ideas of men like Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Pyane. that a country can be governed by it's own people and not a King or ruling elite of aristocrats and wealthy Dynasties. When Washington refused to alow them to make him The King of America, is the day.
I disagree that it is a smear campaign, etc. By whom? For whom? Although I agree with the ideas of the founding fathers, let's not forget that not everyone, and I don't just mean slaves and women, was included in the right to vote. Liberals have made their own bed with their insistance on big government and less rights for the individual. It is interesting that conservatives continue to be proud of the label conservative, even when they choose to re-define it for their own use, and are perfectly willing to stay on topic and discuss the ideals of the Conservative movement. America was established as the world leader in the advancement of Democracy, not because of any superior Military, But because we fostered the Liberal idea that we can have a revolution every 4 years, change our leaders without firing a shot, and continue on to the betterment of all it's people, then made it work. Democracy spread by example, not force. Marxism, Socialism, Communism, and Fascism, were some of the counter measures used to stop this world revolution. Actually many of the founding fathers did not believe in democracy, but rather a consitutional republic. I believe I can hold my head up regarding education. Your cavaet "eductated electorate" is an important one. Again you did not answer the fact that only those who are being "targeted" for their opinion, ie. those in the middle, can be the ones upon who the smear is being propogated. The founding fathers were little interested in sharing public property and in fact originally wanted private property to be specifically mentioned in the life, libery and the pursuit of private property. Just what it has always stood for, find a dictionary used in the days of the founders, Noah Websters, Liberal means the same then as it did then. I agree in part with Gene in Mass. As an evangelical Christian, I find the narrow views of conservatives offensive. However, I do embrace the faith, conservative life style, hard working, family centered views of evangelicals. As a registered Democrat, I am in the minority in my church. Theologically liberal folks are not the only ones who champion the cause of the poor and minorities. You will find a great deal of social ministry and integration among evangelical churches large and small. Like some other posts, I consider myself 'centrist.' It is the polarization of left and right which concerns me. That is why Congress cannot solve problems with Social Security and health care. Too many politicians are afraid to leave the party line to look for real solutions to real problems.
1. Regarding democracy--Take your ideas regarding democracy to Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and see how much you want to live under a democracy. 2. Certainly the Founding Fathers had restrictions regarding the right to vote. (you seem to like to bypass this particular point,) In my opinion, this was mainly to ensure that only those who had a real property stake in the system had a say in it. Although I enjoyed your analysis the key that you missed is that to ensure against the tyranny of the majority the Constitution of the United States made very clear the rights and privileges of its citizens as well as the restrictions on the various governments and that these INDIVIDUAL rights were not to be infringed upon. It is the Constitution that guards your freedoms, certainly not a simple majority. It is why a "super" majority was required to change any parts of the Constitution. I find it really interesting that you prefer a democracy over the Constitutional system which we have now. Show me a democracy, of any size, which has withstood the test of time. You are creating a chicken-and-egg situation here. The Constitution is there to protect democracy and democracy is there to protect the Constitution. If the Constitution failed to protect democracy, then it no longer serves a purpose. All democratic nations in the world except the USA get along without the US Constitution. Most are ruled by a prime minister in stead of an independently elected president.

In historical terms, Democracy is not old, so I suppose none have truly "withstood the test of time". - but you will find very old democracies on Iceland and the Isle of Man. Rudimentary, to be sure, and without the profusion of institutions that we today see as an integral part of government.
